Ferrets make charming and interesting pets. Traditionally their use was to catch rabbits. This was done by putting nets over the rabbit holes in the warren putting a ferret down one of the holes, and the rabbits would come bounding out into the nets. Sounds simple, but you need to retrieve your ferret afterwards.
In the Middle Ages the country people were not allowed to take game (deer, pheasants, duck etc.,) because that was the property of the landowner or the King. Thus many farms would have an artificial rabbit warren made of heaped tree-trunks covered with soil like this:

Thus there was always a ready supply of fresh meat if necessary.
The European Union considers ferrets to be pets in exactly the same category as dogs and cats. They may travel with a microchip and their own Pet Passport. Today we have just sent a pair of ferrets (Mustela Putorius Furo) to Paris.
The ventilation holes on the flight kennel are sometime so large that smaller mesh is required. They have water from a dropper drinker and a hammock to sleep in. Relative to their size and weight they travel in much more comfort that any of the human passengers upstairs!
